U.S. food company Perdue Foods has issued a recall of around 4,530 pounds of chicken nugget products over fear of plastic contamination.
The Applegate Naturals Chicken Nuggets were produced on Sept. 28, 2015. The recalled products carry establishment number "P-2617" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The items were distributed to retail centers across Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, and Texas.
The discovery was made when the company received complaints from consumers stating that Applegate Naturals Chicken Nuggets contained small, solid, clear plastic pieces.
So far, there have been no reports of illnesses linked to the consumption of these products.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has advised consumers who have purchased the product not to consume them. They have been advised to either discard them or return at the place of purchase.
The company stated that it is still investigating the cause of its occurrence. Applegate Farms found that the mishap is an isolated incident to have occurred during the final stages of mixing and producing the product.
The company's notice read: "At Applegate, we're committed to your health and wellbeing and making sure our products meet the highest standards—from the farm to your table. "To that end, we're recalling our 8 oz. packages of Applegate Naturals Chicken Nuggets with the ‘Best Before’ date of Sept. 27, 2016. There may be small pieces of plastic in the product. No injuries or illnesses have been reported.”
