EBay Lets Users Cancel Transactions Amidst Data Breach

EBay sellers are being offered the unprecedented chance to cancel transactions carried out in an 11-day window following a cyberattack impacting eBay's online database.

EBay detected unauthorized access to its user database in February and March and began requiring all buyers and sellers to reset their passwords as of May 21. The company is allowing sellers to cancel any live listings and is proactively refunding listing and commission fees for auction listings that ended on May 21.

EBay said the password reset may have temporarily interrupted the normal bidding process for buyers, and thus will allow some auctions to be cancelled entirely.

"We will also be communicating with the winning bidder for any cancelled auction-style transaction during this time period to ensure they continue to have great buyer experiences on eBay," eBay wrote in a statement.

EBay said it would also remove any defects or negative feedback posted by buyers involving transactions carried out from May 21 - May 31, since some accounts may have been affected by the password reset requirement.

EBay notified users of the data breach on May 21. It had not found evidence of unauthorized activity or access to financial information. Information that was compromised includes customers' names, email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth.

"We know our customers trust us with their information, and we take seriously our commitment to maintaining a safe, secure and trusted global marketplace," according to a statement from eBay.

EBay's payment-processing unit, PayPal, has seen "no evidence of unauthorized access or compromises to personal or financial information." PayPal users' financial information is stored on a separate network, eBay noted.
