A means to measure more effectively

Metrologists have another option when choosing digital micrometers: A new series that features high-speed measuring spindle positioning.

The Micromar 40EWRi-L digital micrometer was unveiled last month by Mahr Co., a large manufacturer of dimensional measuring technology gages and systems based in Providence, RI. The new series—complete with the latest MarConnect interface—allows measurements that are 10 times faster than a standard micrometer. This, in turn, will save operators time when numerous different dimensions must be measured on a single workpiece.

The new micrometer is available in eight standard ranges of zero through 4 in. in 1-in. increments (zero though 100 m in 25-mm increments). With these new and innovative digital micrometers, users can measure faster, more easily and reliably.

This is the first digital micrometer with 10-mm digits on a high-contrast digital display for safe and fatigue-free reading of the measured values. For the first time, it offers an easily understood tolerance display with warning limits. The operator can now recognize whether the workpiece is within the tolerance limits, and measurements gain a higher reliability in quality assurance and expensive rejected parts are avoided. As a result, the manufacturing process becomes more efficient and process costs are optimized.

Andon LED Lights

Lighting the way if problems arise

Visual Workplace Inc., a maker of 5S and lean products, recently released new LED Andon lights. The bright, industrial-grade, heavy-duty metal lights can hold up in any industrial environment.

Andon lights are used to alert managers, maintenance workers and other workers of a quality or process problem.

The device can be configured to hold up to six lights of any color combination. Alarms and buzzers also can be included as part of the devices. The devices can be mounted anywhere and at any height.

The device comes in two sizes:

  • The standard series, which is 2.5-in. in diameter. Typical applications for this version include semiconductor fabricating, CNC and machine tool, laser power supplies, bottling, beverage, food, and packaging equipment.
  • The compact series, which is 1.5-in. in diameter. Typical applications for this version include semi-automated assembly, SMT pick-and-place machines, labelers, friction feeders, and inspection and test systems.

Safety Harnesses

Strapped in for safety, comfort

Two new safety harnesses are ready to protect workers falling in many real-life work scenarios. The harnesses, developed and manufactured by Pure Safety Group, a Houston-based fall protection organization, can be used for personal fall arrest, work positioning, restraint and rescue or confined space applications.

The Series 3 and Series 5 full-body fall protection harnesses feature a captivated chest strap that prevents improper adjustment and accidental slippage, rubber web ends that fold over and protect the harnesses against damage, and dual lanyard keepers for safe storage of unused lanyard legs.

In addition, both harnesses have a loop for easily connecting to a dual SRL connector, freeing up the D-ring for other attachments, and an optional heavy-duty waist pad and belt to accommodate tools. Capacity for the harnesses is 130 to 420 lbs. Each harness offers different features:

Series 3: The torso can be easily adjusted in seconds and its snap-on shoulder padding adds comfort for users while they work. The Velcro-covered label maintains its legibility, and impact indicators alert users if a fall has occurred while the harness has been worn.

Series 5: A cam buckle torso for advanced adjustments, leg padding, durable upgraded shoulder pads and an ergonomic waist pad offer extreme comfort. The harness has a retractable label cover and rubber-impact indicators for load indication. The Series 5 harness also features trauma relief straps that reduce the effects of suspension trauma in the event of a fall.

Beacon Lights

Durable, danger-alert device

A flashing amber light has long been the preferred way to alert people to a potentially dangerous situation. Now there’s a new LED beacon light built tough for extreme environments usually found in marine, heavy industry, fleet, and oil and gas applications.

The beacon light, built by TecNiq, is available with single or AutoSync flash. AutoSync means there’s no need for a central control or interconnection between lamps, which can be costly.

The organization’s technology allows multiple lights to hold a synchronized pattern for more than eight hours of conti-nuous use.

The beacon light has a class one-certified or class two low function. Its polycarbonate amber lens is waterproof, durable and built for rugged use, and is also available with a protective, chrome-plated steel guard.

3-D Imaging

Imagine a better way to make 3-D images, measurements

There’s a new 3-D imager making waves—in a good way—on the marketplace: Leica Geosystems’ BLK3D.

The Leica BLK3D units, which began shipping earlier this year, produce real-time, in-picture 3-D measurements for professionals in industries such as architecture, construction, public safety and real estate. The compact handheld device improves productivity by enabling instant, precise 3-D measurements from any image it captures.

BLK3D captures images and places, and shares images and measurements in multiple formats. The device also features what the Switzerland-based organization calls an “unmatched combination” of a calibrated stereo-camera, advanced algorithms and real-time edge computing, fused with leading electronic distance measurement technology.
