21st Century Excellence

Abstract:W. Edwards Deming's System of Profound Knowledge (SoPK) is a theory that dictates that a leader of an organization must consider all aspects of that organization before making a decision. This theory was the response to high level managers turning to quality for quick fixes for their organization's problems. However, SoPK was developed in the 20th century, and has not evolved to fit the needs of the 21st century. There are several other avenues that provide one piece of a puzzle and offer practical routes for organizations to achieve higher quality. Those avenues include, but are not limited to, the ISO 9001 standard for quality management systems and the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
