Abstract:An inefficient maintenance process for the F-15 aircraft presented challenges to the U.S. Air Force logistics center, largely due to time delays from incomplete work. The center established a system for programmed maintenance that proceeds through specific intermediate stages, or gates. A checklist of completed tasks and available parts facilitates timely progress to the next gate and returning the aircraft to service. A shop floor control chart displays progress at each gate for individual aircraft and shows overall productivity trends. The gates system was modified to adopt a critical chain project management approach, considering not only work completed but also prompt arrival of an aircraft for maintenance and additional resources required to stay on schedule.
