The Ripple Effect

Abstract:This article profiles two organizations that received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2013: Pewaukee School District (PSD) and Sutter Davis Hospital (SDH). PSD has had a strategic planning process in place for more than 20 years. Based on plan-do-study-act, the strategic planning process was the first tool the district used to drive improvement, and the process itself has been refined over several years. Its strategic planning process helped PSD identify and foster its core competencies: 1) a culture of continuous improvement, and 2) its systems approach to leadership and planning. Applying the Baldridge framework gave PSD greater integration of those strategic goals across the district. SDH is a nonprofit, 48-bed acute-care hospital that anchors a medical campus and provides care to key patient segments: medical surgical and intensive care, birthing and obstetrical care, surgery and emergency care.
