Standard Wise

Abstract:The 2015 revision of quality management standard ISO 9001 represents its transition to being more of a business management system standard. Organization can no longer think of ISO 9001 as simply a means to control documents, product nonconformities, internal audits, and preventive and corrective actions. The revision of ISO 9001 focuses on an organization's leadership, planning, support, operations, performance evaluation, and improvement. Organizations that want to be engaged in the global marketplace must look at the standard as a business management system. This article focuses on the core principles in ISO 9001:2008 that the author sees as carrying over to ISO 9001:2015. One of the most powerful benefits of the standard is the principle of employing the process approach. Focusing on implementing a process approach will lead to a systematic method of identifying and controlling processes to ensure that requirements are understood and met in an effort to add value to an …

Since 1986 my clients have developed their process-based business management systems to do a better job of converting customer needs into cash in the bank. These management systems also happen to conform with ISO 9001. It is good to see this approach finally being endorsed by TC176 with their 2015 version of the system standard. Thank you Oscar Combs.

It is a great repositioning for ISO not only as a tool for QMS but also for business MS. It makes sense. Will there be training once ISO 9001:2015 standard out?

Great article that articulates the usefulness of ISO 9001 as a business management tool and not just a QMS. However, I was hoping to read more specifics about what changes are to be expected with the newest revision of the standard.

Thanks for the Standard Wise-ISO 9001 article! The article is informative. However, I expected to see more. The article did not elaborate what are the changes coming in 2015 revision of the standard, except mentioning the inclusion of risk aspect and the use of “business” in process management. Moreover, the article mostly emphasizes the
“should” part of ISO 9001 standard. The main thing is how to implement those “should” parts. Some kind of examples will be very helpful. A good template of such kind of article, is a Six Sigma forum magazine article, Health Care Projects, November 2006, where every category was explained with a representative project example. With the wealth of experience and knowledge the author has, I would request the author to write a second part of this article with real life implementation examples. That will immensely benefit us.

Thanks,

Totally agree with the author. The ISO 9001 should be seen as a business system instead of a quality system. With the ISO 9001:2015 we will have real the business system that should be taked into account. An excellent document.
