Pointed in the Right Direction

Abstract:November 2011 saw the release of a new edition of ISO 19011 — Guidelines for auditing management systems. The 2011 revision expands the scope of the standard from quality and environmental management systems to all management system disciplines and details several topics touched on lightly or not at all in the previous 2002 version of the standard. Confidentiality is added to the list of auditing principles, expanded guidance on the roles and responsibilities of audit managers is provided, and the clause on competence and evaluation of auditors was significantly rewritten to account for the broader scope of the revision. The revision is likely to have a number of future impacts on management system auditing, including an increase in the use of combined audits, agreement across management systems disciplines on the definition of an audit, and a more developed system for determining auditor …
