Know Your Limits

Abstract:At both the organizational and the individual level, many in the manufacturing industry do not understand the limits they operate under. For quality purposes, the three most important types of limit are specification limits, which define the range of values which will result in a product that performs satisfactorily for customers, control limits, which define a range of values which will result in a product that is in control for process control purposes, and disposition limits, which define a range of values which will allow a batch of product to move along the path to shipment to the customer. Reasonableness limits, which define values that are so far off the norm that they are almost certainly the result of error, are also often useful.
