Launch to Quality

Abstract:The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division (NSWC/IHDIV) manufactures and test materials for the Navy’s warfighters. The center had in the past used with limited success various quality techniques to streamline processes, eliminate rework, and reduce costs, so when lean Six Sigma was initiated in September 2004, the effort was met with considerable skepticism. Leadership, however, maintained a steadfast commitment to fully implementing lean Six Sigma and communicating to the workforce that this was an opportunity to fix and improve processes. In the three years since lean Six Sigma has been implemented, the station has reached new heights of efficiency and saved an estimated $8.9 million.
