Abstract:Possibly the most misunderstood and abused metric in performance based manufacturing is machine availability. When examining quality, performance, costs, and cycle time improvements, it is assumed that any performance metrics take into account a machine’s readiness and availability to perform. Many organizations focus on reducing scheduled downtime to increase the effective capacity of a production operation when the focus should be directed at quantifying the financial impact of unscheduled losses.
