This paper presents information on the Quality Management Institute (QMI), a division of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and discusses the establishment and administration of a national Quality System Certification System. This paper also provides a flowchart on the QMI Registration Process and gives advice to companies wanting to register their quality assurance programs with QMI.

In 1981, QMI (CSA) began an auditor accreditation program that required a review of the auditor's experience and qualifications and a written examination. QMI's Registration Program employs detailed manual/audit checklists and QMI accredited auditors who meet the requirements of ISO 10011.

An appendix to the article, How to Get Your Quality Assurance Program Registered by QMI includes information on selection of a standard, scope of application, definition and implementation of the system, registration application, initial assessment, Quality Manual Review, Quality System Audit, Recognition of Registration (QMI) Registration Certificate), and Registration Process Flowchart.

QMI registration is recognized by dozens of major purchasers in telecommunications, electrical utilities, petrochemical companies, pulp and paper companies, and mining industries. It is also widely accepted by government purchasing bodies and agencies.
