Article Abstract

[This abstract is based on the authors' text.] While recognizing the role Genichi Taguchi has played in sparking interest in the application of experimental design techniques in engineering, the authors contend that too much money is being spent on learning Taguchi methods. They offer an alternative approach that proposes the following changes: "a sequential test plan to provide more information in less time with less effort by allowing the experimenter to make better use of what is learned as the testing proceeds, a more meaningful simulation method, response surface methodology to replace analysis of variance (ANOVA), decision analysis techniques to find the best combination of location and dispersion parameters."
