Article Abstract

Many statistical analyses directly or indirectly assume that the population from which the sample was drawn is normally distributed. This article examines conditions under which one might or might not expect some variable to be normally distributed, indicates procedures which may be used to check the normality assumption, suggests transformations to achieve a better approximation to normality, and comments on the consequences of incorrectly assuming normality.
