Article Abstract

The two general Standards for the sampling of bulk materials reviewed illustrate the problems of developing statistically-sound sampling methods for each bulk material with its peculiar and individualistic characteristics, arising from its state, its location, and its degree of homogeneity. Guides in the application of these standards are given, pitfalls noted, and proper methods of calculation of risks and costs are indicated. Much work in the development of useful, probability and statistically oriented bulk sampling standards needs to be done. The need is highlighted by the dearth of important government standards in this field.
