Article Abstract

As the forerunner to a subsequent article on response surface fitting by Dr. J. S. Hunter, this article briefly discusses the mathematical concepts needed to understand the techniques. Included are multiple regression, factorial designs, theory of maxima and minima, and direction of steepest ascent or descent in multi-dimensional space.
