Article Abstract

The American Concrete Institute's Technical Activities Committee is currently reviewing a major revision to the ACI Committee 311 (Inspection of Concrete) document which will shortly be published as a "Guide for Concrete Inspection Programs." In addition, ACI Committee #902 (Certification) with the ACI Education Department's Certification Section is in the process of "getting on the street" a new certification program for Concrete Construction Inspector - Level II. Roger Wilson was responsible for drafting the initial training program for the Grade I Field Testing Certification program and is now on the ACI Educational Activities Committee helping to oversee the development of the entire certification program as well as being chairman of Committee 311.

The Portland Cement Association is also cooperating in both of these efforts and is in the process, through its education and training group, of producing three videotapes to be used in the training of concrete construction inspectors. They will address Preplacement Inspection, Placing Inspection and Post Placement Inspection. Detail is being drawn from the ACI Manual of Concrete Inspection produced by Committee 311.

The presentation is a review of the current status of concrete inspection, the philosophy behind development of the new inspection guide and a discussion of the key elements contained in it. The "guide" is then related to the certification program for concrete construction inspectors and the development of materials, particularly videotapes to be used in the education and training of all levels of concrete inspection and testing personnel.
