Article Abstract

DynMcDermott Petroleum Operations (DM) holds the maintenance and operations contract for the Department of Energy's strategic petroleum reserve. High DOE expectations prompted DM's Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award journey ten years ago when DM began participating in state quality award programs in Louisiana and Texas, but it wasn't until 2005 that the organization won the Baldrige Award in the service category. To provide a structure for Baldrige, DM became certified in ISO 9001 and matured its system by applying Six Sigma to its critical processes. DM has proven that leadership, ownership, and empowerment throughout the organization are the key to continuous improvement. Although hurricanes Katrina and Rita left the majority of DM's employees displaced, the organization was able to restore operations immediately and provide oil to refiners less than five days after Katrina. A sidebar article explains how internal assessment plays and important role at DM.
