Article Abstract

One feature of the ASQ section 205 support of a small ASQ student branch at Broome Community College in Binghamton, New York is an invitation to Broome alumni to apply for the international visitor fellowship sponsored by the section and the Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships program at Broome. Selected applicants attend an annual October dinner at Broome where he or she serves as guest speaker and business ambassador. The college works closely with international groups and agencies to bring education in the quality field to deserving scholars from Central American and the Caribbean. As the need for continuing education, networking and professional development for quality professionals became apparent, the first Latin American Quality Conference was held two years ago in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic. The conferenceļæ½s success led to the establishment by the ASQ International Chapter of a conference organizing committee. Support was solicited from corporate and organizational sponsors. The 2003 conference, again held in Santo Domingo, hosted 200 participants from 12 countries. One specific accomplishment was to move from a sponsor supported event to a self-sustaining activity. Plans are underway for the next conference with hopes for future expansion into a regional series of quality conferences held in a different Latin American host country each year.
