Article Abstract

Ultratech Stepper (UTS), a manufacturer of photolithography equipment, became both ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14000 certified in less than a year at a cost under $200,000, using only two employees to manage the effort part-time. UTS's quality steering committee followed a 13-step plan to accomplish this objective that featured senior management and employee education, creation of a mission statement, policy definition, readiness review, and internal audits. Since other organizations provided resources on an as-needed basis, daily workflow was unaffected. Better communication and training and the implementation of metrics had the added benefit of improving production. A sidebar article reveals the findings of the external auditor.
