Article Abstract

[This abstract is based on the author's abstract.] Measurement system analysis (MSA) is used to demonstrate that a measurement process is adequate for its intended purpose. Two basic types of metrics use variance component estimates to determine whether the measurement process is adequate. One compares the measurement error to the variation among tested devices or to the total variation, the other compares the measurement error to the width of the test limits or the product specifications. Alignment, a situation common in the testing of consumer electronic devices, is described. While not a test in the usual sense, alignment presents a challenge in using the standard metrics to determine the adequacy of a measurement process. An ideal solution has yet to be identified, but several potential solutions are proposed.
