Article Abstract

[This abstract is based on the author's abstract.] In designing exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control charts it is generally assumed that the parameters are known. In most industrial and service applications, however, the parameters are unknown, and using charts based on this assumption can result in poor chart performance. A method is discussed in which the assumption of known parameters is relaxed and the design of the EWMA chart is developed accordingly. This design eliminates early false alarms associated with EWMA charts using estimated parameters where known parameters are required.
