Article Abstract

[This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] Quality management programs implemented for continuous quality improvement at the University of Cincinnati are described. One of the earliest programs was implemented in 1993 to improve teaching effectiveness in the College of Engineering. It was based on the plan-do-study-act cycle. In a benchmarking program in 1994, two surveys were distributed by the College of Engineering to universities to gauge awareness about total quality management practices. Strategic enrollment management programs were implemented in 1995 to optimize retention, recruitment, and graduation rates. In 1996, the quality function deployment approach was used to design a freshman-year program to increase student retention and learning. Tools, objectives, processes, and results of these programs are reviewed.
