Article Abstract

Visibility tools support the management of improvement projects while providing information to investors in proposed projects. There are three categories of cost effective and useful visibility tools. First, object-based simulation software can show how proposed improvements will work. This is done by animating the flowchart process and by readily incorporating revisions and projections into the improvement model. Second, team management software puts traditional project management software into a network mode so that planning can be done online. Changes can be seen by everyone, and the revised plan is kept up to date and visible. Third, snapshot charts display costs, budget, and progress on given criteria for each project. Data for the snapshots come from the quality team, from team management, and from quality investment management. This article includes a case study of visibility tools used at SensorMedics for a throughput improvement project. SensorMedics used SIMUL8 object simulation software, Microsoft Team Manager '97 software, and an Excel-based snapshot chart. This article also has a full-page sidebar on the Monte Carlo technique used with object-based simulation software.
