Article Abstract

Quality of communication, quality of information, and quality of care have been improved at a small hospital through upgrading of technology. In quality of communication, the hospital has increased the number of personal computers. The machines have been linked via an intranet that has 450 users. An increase in the number and use of fax machines as well as introduction of an enhanced e-mail system have improved communication, as have a common planner program on the intranet, an internal cellular phone system, and a new voice mail system. To improve the quality of information, one new information system has replaced a collection of standalone departmental systems. The new system consolidates clinical, cost, and reimbursement data. Its charting system links about 255 bedside terminals. Information in the system is readily analyzed and transformed into reports, and interdisciplinary teams use the data for trend analyses. More than 350 data elements for 185,000 records are available. The hospital's information system also provides access to the Internet. Improved quality of information has facilitated management by fact. In quality of care, the latest implementations include upgrading to a more efficient CAT scan machine, a more time-effective dictation system, and consideration of buying hospital beds that prevent bedsores.
