Article Abstract

The American Society for Quality (ASQ) Foundations in Quality Programs include the Certified Quality Manager and Certified Quality Auditor programs. Computer-based delivery of these programs consists of seven steps. First, each participant takes a pre-test to evaluate the understanding of quality issues and to plan a course of study. Second, the participant goes through each module at his or her own pace. Third, self-assessment questions are answered at the end of each module. Fourth, after all the modules have been completed, a game is played while answering questions that increase proficiency in quality topics. Fifth, case study exercises or essay exercises are completed. Sixth, the participant takes a post-test. Seventh, the participant receives a report that compares the pre- and post-test results, thus indicating areas for improvement. An 80 percent score on the post-test leads to continuing education credits. For organizations with large audiences, there are multiple-user options, including intranet implementations, site licensing, and classroom sessions. Since its release in March 1997, ASQ has sold over 3000 units of the Certified Quality Manager product. The Certified Quality Auditor program was released in May 1998.
