Article Abstract

Sample major and minor elements derived from a matrix related to process observations help resolve a limitation of Hotelling's T2 statistic. This limitation is T2's inability to identify the variable(s) that might be out of control. A new method facilitates variable identification by writing T2 as a linear combination of major and minor elements. When T2 control charts are compared with major elements control charts, the latter are more robust in identifying changes in process means. More specific information about mean shifts then is available from an analysis of the minor elements.
