Reviews of Standards and Specifications: The Performance of MIL-STD-105D under the Switching Rules, Part 1: Evaluation

Summary: MIL-STD-105D is a sampling scheme. As such, switching from normal to tightened or reduced plans must be utilized to effect optimum protection. Unfortunately, the standard itself presents tables of operating characteristics and other measures for individual plans only, and not for the overall scheme it represents. Part 1 of this paper shows that proper use of the switching rules results in greater protection for both the consumer and the producer. The average sample number and average outgoing quality are also significantly improved. The functioning of the switching rules, in light of their effect on scheme operating characteristics, is also discussed. Part 2 presents complete tables of probability of acceptance (Pa), average sample number (ASN), average outgoing quality (AOQ), average outgoing quality limit (AOQL), and average total inspection (ATI) when the switching rules are fully utilized.
