Optimizing Software Inspections with Statistical Quality Techniques

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors� abstract.]Software inspection can be effective in removing defects early in the software life cycle, but if not properly managed could cost more than it saves. When effort, product size, and defects are consistently measured, both the quality of the inspection process and the quality of the product can be managed. By forecasting the number of defects in downstream test processes and comparing them to actual defects, data from test can be fed back into the inspection checklist, creating a self-optimizing closed-loop process. A structured defect prevention process combined with inspection brings developers into process improvement and significantly improves process yield.
