Transforming Quality Management Practices: Applying the Hong Kong/China Experiences

Summary: [This abstract is based on the author's abstract] The quality transformation process seeks to enhance the forms and patterns of quality activities. It influences the adoption of quality management practices in companies and also governs the development trend of quality management in regions and countries. Much of the low-cost manufacturing previously done in Hong Kong has been transferred to China. The transplantation of these operations to China requires an integrated transfer of technical, financial, and management expertise. In particular, it necessitates a transfer of quality management concepts and practices. In the early 1990s, ISO 9000 was adopted and had significant impact on the quality movement in Hong Kong. Many Hong Kong companies in China have adopted continuous quality improvement strategies and are advised to continue helping their partners in China to commit to quality and increase their capabilities for continuous improvement. The currently adopted Hong Kong ISO 9000-CQI-TQM step-by-step quality model is recommended for China.
