MILWAUKEE, Wis., July 10, 2014 —Reducing hospital readmissions should be the top priority to help health care organizations lower costs, according to new poll of U.S. health care quality improvement professionals conducted by ASQ, the world’s largest network of quality resources and experts.
Recent studies show Americans pay the highest prices in the world for hospital stays, prescription drugs and common procedures like childbirth. The studies also show that high quality medical care is lacking in the United States. According to the online poll of more than 300 ASQ members in the health care quality profession, respondents said that, in addition to reducing readmissions, their top priorities would include:
Hurdles to Health Care Cost-Cutting
But health care organizations face serious hurdles as they try to implement these changes. Survey respondents ranked the following operational challenges by level of difficulty:
“Controlling the high cost of health care is a complex undertaking due its many moving parts,” said Dr. Joseph Fortuna, immediate past chair of ASQ’s Healthcare Division. “Many health care professionals are responding daily to incentives, educational experiences and performance measures that are frequently counter-intuitive to true cost-reduction and quality improvement.”
