Streamlining the Department of Social Services’ Workflow
Abstract: DESCRIPTION: In spring 2008, university extension service provider TCIE of the University at Buffalo began a partnership to help make Erie County the nation's first large, metropolitan county government to implement Lean Six Sigma. TCIE’s work in training a cross-section of county employees in varying levels of Lean Six Sigma mastery was honored with the 2009 "Award of Excellence in Workforce Development" by the University Economic Development Association. This webinar features process improvements made within the Department of Social Services, and specifically the project that saved nearly $30,000 in its first year of implementation through reduced overtime costs. It explores the approach that transformed the Temporary Assistance application process into a more efficient one – decreasing the average time of completion by 27 percent – at a time of staff cutbacks paired with a rising request for benefits. The webinar will also touch on subsequent initiatives undertaken within the department, resulting from the initial project.
