The ASQ/EED sponsored the IQuES ISO 14001 Implementation Workshop at the Caribbean Institute for Quality (CIQ), Chaguanas, Trinidad, April 29–May 1, 2003. Seven participants from Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad attended the three-day course. IQuES provided the course material, and EED member Terrell Horne conducted the workshop.
The
participants received an overview of the ISO 14000 family of
standards, followed by a detailed review and discussion of the
ISO 14001 requirements, including five case studies designed to
give the participants practice in applying the requirements to
given situations. The steps in the implementation process were
then discussed, followed by the development of Environmental
Management System (EMS) documentation. The final topic addressed
was internal auditing, including how the auditing tool might be
used to assist the EMS implementation process.
The IQuES Participants' Handbook contained useful information, including examples of documentation that can be used to implement an EMS in conformance with ISO 14001 requirements.
The following participants earned 1.95 IACET CEUs/RUs through ASQ:
- Paul Lue Lim and Melvyn Howell, Caribbean Cement Company Limited, Jamaica
- Perry Brown, Lawrence Granger, and Rajeev Chadee, Trinidad Cement Company Limited, Trinidad
- Nicole Thomas, Arawak Cement Company Limited, Barbados
- Stephenson B. Verasammy, Caribbean Institute for Quality
ASQ/EED is pleased to have had the opportunity to work with Ms.
Cherry Ann Lau, CIQ Director, in presenting the IQuES ISO 14001
Implementation Workshop at the CIQ. Fifteen participants took
part in the first course offered in October 2002. Additional
workshops are planned.
