Joe Paluzzi, EED Waste Minimization and Pollution Prevention Committee Chair, was recently honored by an invitation from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to submit an article for publication on waste minimization and pollution prevention. His article, “Elemental Keys to Sustainable Waste Prevention” appears in Our Fragile World: Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Development, described below. The two-volume set, available in 27 languages, includes articles from 200 authors selected worldwide, including several Nobel Laureates. This singular recognition reflects great credit not only on Joe, but also on the Energy and Environmental Division as a whole, confirming the level of international influence that the division has achieved.
As a forerunner to the Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems, Our Fragile World: Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Development is published in two hardback volumes of about 2,240 pages with an accompanying CD-ROM and a two-year, complimentary, single-user access to the Web-based Encyclopedia. Our Fragile World presents integrated knowledge and worldviews related to the state of earth's natural resources, social resources, institutional resources, and economic and financial resources.
It presents the vision and thinking of over 200 eminent personalities. Among them are Nobel Laureates M. Molina and L. Lederman; existing and former heads of United Nations organizations, such as P. Obasi from WMO, K. Toepfer from UNEP, K. Matsuura from UNESCO, V. Petrovsky from the U.N., N. Sadik from UNFPA, and G. Speth from UNDP; presidents of national academies of sciences, including Yu.
