Battelle Press, the publishing arm of Battelle in Columbus, Ohio, recently released a Number of books that serve the technical information needs of environmental quality professionals.

The Environmental Impact Statement Process and Environmental Law, 2nd Edition, by Emmett B. Moore, contains a thorough description of the entire EIS process. It includes activities related to deciding to prepare an EIS, publishing the notice of intent in the Federal Register, scoping the effort, preparing the draft EIS, preparing the final EIS, and publishing the record of decision. The book discusses the content of an EIS in detail, describing various environmental assessments that must be included. It addresses air quality, water quality, land use, waste handling, transportation, ecology and endangered species, and cultural and historic sites, as well as the element of the National Environmental Policy Act. This second edition includes new and expanded information related to environmental assessments, risk assessments, and Internet sources. It is intended for use by professionals, students, and the general public. For more information, seewww.battelle.org.

An Introduction to the Management and Regulation of Hazardous Waste, also by Emmett B. Moore, describes the major types of hazardous wastes, technologies for handling them, and the legal framework within which hazardous waste managers must operate. It is an introductory text that will help readers who are not fully conversant in the subject to understand better the federal regulations relevant to hazardous waste management and cleanup. It will also aid readers in becoming familiar with the major types of waste and understanding the management and remediation technologies for both active and abandoned waste sites. Pollution Prevention Opportunity Assessments for Research & Development Laboratories, by Jill Engel-Cox and Kim Fowler, presents proven tools and examples of ways to reduce waste generated by R&D processes, projects, and programs. It assists in identifying ways to reduce chemical and material use, minimize waste generation, and reduce associated costs. The book includes a pollution prevention opportunity assessment that provides a simple, systematic approach for finding pollution prevention opportunities, developing them, and documenting the effort. What it offers is real: the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory applied this approach and avoided $1.9 million in waste-related costs over the past three years. Vadose Zone Science and Technology Solutions, edited by Brian B. Looney and Ronald W. Falta, is a two-volume set that stands as a unique, comprehensive reference on characterizing and modeling vadose zone system behavior and cleanup of vadose zone contamination. The book documents the state of the art in vadose science in a practical, useful manner. It presents technical and scientific issues (known and unknown), challenges, and practical strategies. An accompanying CD includes 130 additional case studies that illustrate the scientific issues in a direct and compelling manner. Case studies provide practical field data and describe integration of characterization, monitoring, modeling, and cleanup. The book provides a comprehensive view, beginning with an introduction to the vadose zone and associated physical and chemical processes and ending with a focus on future technology. In between, it

  • discusses the components of an effective program,
  • describes baseline and state-of-the-art characterization methods,
  • describes the fate and transport of contaminants,
  • documents state-of-the-art containment and remediation methods, and
  • identifies gaps in understanding and suggests solutions.

The book is not for novices. It’s written at a college-graduate level and intended to serve problem owners, researchers, and consultants who provide technical guidance, managers and decision makers who must take action, and members of the academic community.
