At its annual award ceremony, the Energy & Environmental Division recognized its outstanding members in conjunction with the division’s fall conference held this year in Tucson on August 28.
The division’s highest award, the Basile Award, was presented to Gary L. Johnson, who has served as the division’s chair and has chaired numerous successful conferences dealing with environmental management systems. Ron Fitzgerald, vice-chair of the American Society for Quality, presented the Basile to Gary.
Ben Marguglio was awarded the QA Person of the Year. Ben serves as vice-chair for the Business Sector in the division and is a quality professional with Consolidated Edison Company of New York. Ben has served many years as chair of the division’s Nuclear Power Production Committee and has led the committee in the development and publication of many documents used by quality professionals in that industry. Ben was one of the first quality professionals to advocate the use of quality management system practices in the environmental field, publishing a book on that topic.
The division awarded its Long-Term Service Award to Terrell Horne, who is serving as treasurer for the 1999–2001 term and is past chair of the division and conference chair.
Service Awards were presented to Dan Zrymiak for his work in advocating the division to quality and environmental professionals in Canada, Ken Rose for his work in developing the division’s electronic magazine, Robert Hartstern for his great work in organizing the division’s fall conference in San Antonio in 1999, and Gary Johnson for his work in organizing the division’s spring conference in Las Vegas in 2000.
This year’s Energy Industry Award went to two distinguished leaders in the quality field: Mr. Don Horton and Mr. Robert Clark, both with the U.S. Department of Energy.
The division presented this year’s Environmental Industry Award to Consolidated Edison Company of New York for success with its environmental management system. Mr. Michael Saladino, section manager for Environmental, Safety, and Health, accepted the award on behalf of Consolidated Edison.
