ASQ - Energy and Environmental Division

The 27th Annual Energy and Environmental Conference was held August 27–30 in Tucson, Arizona, where a enthusiastic group of quality professionals met to exchange ideas and real-life experiences and to learn from some of the leaders in the industry. The conference began with a keynote speech by the chief financial officer at Arizona Public Service, who provided an outlook for the 21st century and what deregulation of the utilities will mean to the future of the energy and environmental sectors.

John Dew, technical program chairman, put together an outstanding technical program that all attendees enjoyed. Twenty-four technical sessions were presented, covering quality and environment, health and safety, energy, and government, with an emphasis on presenting real experiences and practical approaches to the work place.

Other activities that were enjoyed by the attendees and their guests were the preconference golf tournament, Sunday night reception, and a shopping trip to Nogales, Mexico. Of special interest was the Monday luncheon speaker, Joan Balser, handwriting analyst. She got all the attendees involved by requesting handwriting samples and offering her analyses.

I hope the conference was enjoyed by all, and I hope to see all of you at the 2001 conference.
