Creating a Kaizen Movement During Economic Turbulence

by Coleman, Mychal; Barwis, Erin;

Quality Approaches in Higher Education Vol. 2 No. 1 (June 2011) article by Mychal Coleman and Erin Barwis. In these tight economic times, continuous improvement initiatives should serve as a welcome strategy. While much of the published research on implementation focuses on failure—this case study focuses on success. From realigning administration surrounding school-wide support services to training a team of informal Kaizen team leaders, the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota embedded continuous improvement into normal operations. Phase one of implementation is examined in the full text, noting the plan, structure, and support necessary for such a large cultural change within an academic institution. Along with full support from the dean, the structured, three-step Lean training of the Kaizen team leaders is the key piece to ensuring long-term learning and strategic collaboration throughout the Carlson School.

Monitoring Student Attrition to Enhance Quality

by Shah, Mahsood; Nair, C. Sid;

Quality Approaches in Higher Education Vol. 1 (2) August 2010 article by Mahsood Shah and Chenicheri Sid Nair. Student retention is one key performance indicator used in universities to track learning and teaching performance. Research indicates that student retention and success in higher education improves an individual’s chance of securing employment opportunities, achieving career goals, and contributing to society and the economic development of the nation. Some consider retention as a moral purpose of a university to improve student success— particularly for the most disadvantaged student groups. This article outlines survey findings from a large public university in Australia with first-year undergraduate students who enrolled and later withdrew. The survey was conducted as a result of consistently high student attrition rates compared to other Australian universities. The university took the initiative to determine the reasons for student withdrawal and implemented a university-wi

Integrating Writing into the Freshman Engineering Curriculum

by Newborg, Beth; Ford, Jr., Michael W. ; Budny, Dan;

Quality Approaches in Higher Education Vol. 1 (2) August 2010 article by Dan Budny, Beth Newborg, Michael W. Ford, Jr. of the University of Pittsburgh. This paper describes the English/ Freshman Engineering Writing Program (E/FEWP) at the Swanson School of Engineering, University of Pittsburgh. This ongoing collaboration among engineering and English department faculty and engineering librarians has made university-level research and writing an essential, integral part of the engineering experience. By describing the writing projects and the concepts that created them, we hope to provide useful tools to assist other educators in developing and/or enhancing the use of writing within their engineering curricula and classrooms.

Metrics and Methodology for Assessing Engineering Instruction

by Watson, Karen; Taber, Richard M. ; King, J. Judson; Fortenberry, Norman L. ; Cady, Elizabeth T.; Arreola, Raoul; Ambrose, Susan A. ;

Quality Approaches in Higher Education Vol. 1 (2) August 2010 article by Karen Watson, Richard Taber, J. Judson King, Norman L. Fortenberry, Elizabeth T. Cady, Raoul Arreola, Susan A. Ambrose. In recent years, increased attention has been devoted to the assessment of teaching. For example, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) issued a 2007 report that offered a conceptual framework (quantity, quality, and engagement) and specific categories of educator activity (such as teaching, curriculum, advising and mentoring, educational leadership, and learner assessment). We can define assessment-of-the educator activities specified in the AAMC report as an assessment of teaching effectiveness. This article discusses this assessment and includes a recommended rubric.
