MapCores: Improving the Representation of Women in STEM

Abstract: The gender gap in participation in mathematics, physics, computer science and engineering is a well-known problem of higher education. Researchers have identified numerous social and environmental factors that contribute to gender differences in entry and persistence in these disciplines. To improve the representation of women in STEM fields, in fall 2009, the College of Saint Benedict started the Math, Physics, Computer Science Research Scholars (MapCores) program. The MapCores program uses scholarship support, special curricular offerings and research opportunities to increase the success of women in STEM fields.
