Empowerment through Engagement: Implementing Student-led IEPs
Abstract: Student-led individualized education plans (IEPs) can foster 21st century skills in students with disabilities. In a collaborative effort with the special education and general education staff, parents, and student, a comprehensive IEP can be developed while empowering students through engagement in the process. Implementing IEPs is a process that leads to student ownership, self-advocacy, and self-determination. This article examines how to implement student-led IEPs from the planning stages, the IEP meeting, and reflection following the meeting while using a plethora of quality tools and means of data collection.
