Importance of Practical Application in the Teaching of Six Sigma Concepts

Abstract: In fall 2009, Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla developed a lean Six Sigma graduate certificate to provide an environment conducive for active learning and conscientious mentoring. The certificate requires four graduate courses, including lean manufacturing systems, Six Sigma, design for Six Sigma and probability and statistics or statistical data analysis. Three of the four courses require hands-on semester projects, which enable the students to apply course topics as they are covered within the course. This provides a knowledge-based and immersive learning environment for the student to achieve implementable skill sets upon completion of the curriculum.
