Community Colleges: Student Engagement and Workforce Development

Abstract: This paper discusses the current efforts to increase the graduation rate of community college students. Among these efforts is the American Graduation Initiative, which is discussed along with the connectedness of the community colleges to workforce development. National Statistics on community colleges are presented, which show that 40% of the first-time college freshmen attend community colleges. In addition, recent student engagement survey statistics are discussed along with their implications for student persistence in community colleges.
