Jerold Schlegel, director of quality assurance and food safety, Dawn Foods
Jerold Schlegel, an ASQ member for 10 years and a senior member, works at Dawn Foods as the director of quality assurance and food safety. There, he is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive quality systems and quality documentation across multiple sites. Additionally, as a project manager for the data collection and analysis, Schlegel works closely with internal departments and external clients to help design, develop and implement technology to support and automate business applications and processes.
Schlegel received his bachelor’s degree in milling science and management from Kansas State University and his MBA from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA. He is a Texas Tech University-certified Master Six Sigma Black Belt and a University of Buffalo-certified Six Sigma Black Belt. He’s also an ASQ-certified quality auditor.
Schlegel recently answered questions about Six Sigma and the importance of quality.
What do you think is most important in implementing a Six Sigma project? Sustainability (define, measure, analyze, improve and control) after the key participants have left the camp.
Why do you think Six Sigma is important?
It’s a great approach to problem solving and critical thinking awareness.
Why do you think quality is important?
Consistent product quality is no longer the goal, but the expectation of the customer.
What’s your favorite benefit of quality?
The ability to make a positive impact on the level of product quality that the customer receives.
Why did you choose to go into the quality field?
The multi-skill requirements to tie in quality and process improvements that are sustainable appealed to me, so I decided to pursue quality as a career.
What’s your best advice to someone new to quality?
It is a very rewarding career, but at times, hard decisions must be made.
