Query for Certifications

Why does ASQ not post Certifications on their website? Other professional organizations, such as ASNT, API etc., allow employers the oppurtunity to verify their employees professional certifications. This is something that I think would be a valuable addtion to the website.

It would violate the current privacy policy. The policy is currently being reviewed by the membership committee, and we will be confirming with the certification board. Then it goes to bylaws, then to the board for approval. This is part of a larger change that the membership committee is working on. Beyond a privacy policy adjustment, this would also require IT/programming related changes that I cannot speak to - this kind of information may roll physically end up rolling into the Learning Institute area.

It is interesting to see someone is actually talking about this other than disgruntled members. This has been a long-running campaign by John Conte who has expressed a lot of frustration over this.

I wanted to give an update to my earlier comments. As I noted, this is part of the larger context of some work being done by the membership committee. Staff needs to take this issue for legal review due to ASQ's status as a 403(b). Some other organizations have received guidance to use the US HIPAA laws as a guideline for any disclosure of information. We cannot release information in any way that would potentially affect the organization's tax status.

This means that proposed changes are not likely to make it onto the agenda for the board meeting held at WCQI, but if we can make changes, I will try to get them to the board as soon as possible.

Aimee,

Has ASQ ascertained that the majority of the membership wants this? Not being in the "inner circle" myself, I can only go by what I see here, which looks like a possible case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease.

How big of a deal is this? I, for one, do not feel ASQ should make this information available on the web site. There are other ways for employers to verify certifications, namely making the employee provide the proof. If someone has put forth the effort to get certified, then he should also accept responsibility for providing his employer with proof of said certification, not rely on ASQ to do it for him.

Thanks for the chance to air my opinion, and I hope this is taken into consideration.

If it is determined that it can legally be posted, it would be done on an opt in basis. Like any of the other information in your profile, you would be able to choose if you wanted the information to be shared. The intent is to ensure that the privacy of individuals is respected.

Tyro,

Only one proviso on your proposed method, does the employer know to check to see of the certification is still valid and not expired?

As a nurse, employers are required to verify that I not only have a a nursing license, which they must have a copy of my nursing license in my personnel file that I provide them on hire and every time it is renewed, but that it is current and is "in good standing" which they do by going online to the nurse licensure website page.

Just something to consider.

Aimee - any updates on this topic? I was hoping that this might be acted upon before the next time I am required to re-certify and simultaneously reach my SSA full retirement age! (June 2010)

John,

Staff is working on a draft of the changes to share with the lawyers for review and implications. Assuming there are not issues with proposed changes (this is bigger than the question of whether or not certification information can be shared), any proposed changes will still require approval and implementation.

They are using the second phase of the Learning Institute as a guiding timeline. They are targeting the conversation with the lawyers for early October. I will let you know as soon as I have any additional information.

Last week I was in Toronto teaching a CQE Exam preparation course for ASQ. The students, 40% who were unemployed were trying to get certified as ASQ CQEs, they where disappointed to learn that if they are successful at the certification process, that ASQ will not verify to a potential employer thier claim that they are a CQE. A potential employer is going to be looking for a simple way to verify thier claim long before they contact them for an interview. While ASQ ponders the merits of this proposal these members will be looking for employment.

When I completed my certification tests, I usually got a certificate and a card form ASQ showing which certifcate I had earned and I think it had the date it was good for.

This was years ago.

That has not changed.

You have implied that if an employer contacted ASQ to verify information, that they would say no, which is not correct.

I wrote "potential" implying one who was sorting out resumes and searching for the most qualified.

My experience (on both sides of the hiring table) has been that employers don't try to verify information until they have made a tentative decision to hire an individual. Verifying certifications, college degrees and such is time consuming and not value added until you have winnowed the group of applicants down to those you have talked to and believe they might be a good fit.

In my world, having heard nothing in six months, means you have no additional information.
