Uniform Maker Sews Up Success With Scorecard

Abstract:Operadora Ganso Azul S.A. de C.V. is an ISO 9001 sewing factory in Mexico facing growing competition for China. In 2000 when the company began operating as a maquiladora producing uniforms for police officers and firefighters, rapid expansion created inefficiencies and loss of control over parts of the operation. While ISO 9001 helped reestablish control, the balanced score card (BSC) was used to focus strategy and measure the effectiveness of the company's continuous improvement program. The BSC proposes that overall entity performance ultimately is affected by various components or perspectives. If critical factors that impact each of these perspectives or dimensions can be improved, the corresponding business dimension will improve, as will the financial results.
