Faster Turnaround Time

Abstract:In 2004, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) used Six Sigma to reduce bed assignment delay turnaround time that made it difficult to balance capacity needs. A capstone project revealed incorrect use of the hospital's bed tracking system. The goal was to shift the mean turnaround time and reduce the standard deviation. The team discovered both a communication and technical failure in two key steps in the process that caused great delay. Once the project was turned over to the nursing management team, the process went from a turnaround time of 226 minutes to 90 minutes, and the Six Sigma score went from 1 sigma to 2.3 sigma at the end of the six-month project.
