Repeatability and Reproducibility

Abstract: A type of specification used in acceptance sampling of a lot of items involves the use of tolerance intervals. The producer is required to make the following type of statement about a lot, "With 100% confidence at least 100P% of the items in the lot are acceptable, i.e., within specifications." In this situation, the producer has freedom in selecting his sample size; all he must do is perform sufficient sampling to permit his making the required tolerance interval statement. However, in exercising this freedom, he must use care to properly assess the risk to the consumer if he attempts to meet the specification with a multiple type sampling plan. This paper evaluates this risk when the inspection is on a certain attributes basis.
