ASQ and the New Food Safety Law

If you’ve been following news about the food safety bill, you know that President Obama signed the Food Safety Modernization Act into law on January 5.  The law gives the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the power to recall tainted food, quarantine geographic areas, and access food producers’ records. To read AP’s story about the food safety bill, click here.

What’s ASQ’s role in this? Through the ASQ-ANSI National Accreditation Board, we’ve been educating legislators and FDA officials on the importance of using international standards when drafting regulations into the new law. We think it’s important to move the discussion upstream from detection and crisis management to prevention.  We think that accredited third-party assessment with oversight is a proven tool that will help private industry and the FDA to effectively protect the nation’s food supply.   This is founded on international standards that establish clear requirements.
