Which Social Networks Do Quality Professionals Use?

ASQ recently enhanced and redesigned our online communities. As some of you know, ASQ’s Communities are a social network that’s open to both our members and non-members. Communities have discussion boards, forums, blogs, and more. Communities are especially popular for certification discussions. I encourage you to take a look.

The overhaul of ASQ’s Communities got me wondering about which online communities you take part in for professional networking with others in quality. Many of you have blogged for quite a few years. Before that, were you active on social networks of yore, such as Usenet discussion forums and AOL? These days, which sites do you find the most helpful and useful for the quality field, and why?

Conversely, some of you might avoid social media altogether. Do you spend your energy on in-person networking? Or are you more concerned about privacy or computer issues?

    An interesting way to test this would be to have social media “share” buttons on the post for more than twitter and facebook.

    I suspect LinkedIn and Twitter are more relevant social media for professional conversations about quality, etc. I think Google+ is completely irrelevant and I doubt Pinterest is used much for quality or professional discussions. But that’s just me.

  3. I primarily use Twitter and LinkedIn, and tend to stay away from the ASQ community feature. Here’s my reasoning for each:

    Twitter – nice mix of all different realms that interact with Quality. Types of accounts I follow deal with Quality, Lean, IT, OpsMgt, Motivational, among others. Any more, all of these things are melding together as the industrial world is moving more towards Manufacturing Operations Management, which incorporates all of those things.

    LinkedIn – excellent way to build an actual network. Feels more like interacting with real people that are part of my actual professional network, rather than people posting and interacting with content (although I try to post a bunch of content to stay fresh in peoples’ minds)

    Twitter and LinkedIn both tie in to my Klout score, which is actually important to me (might not be to most casual social media users). Klout score is something I use to gauge my goal of staying active on social media and have a growing presence.

    The issue I have with the ASQ community function (sorry if this is brutally honest) is that it feels kind of like a social island. I’ve already done a bunch of work to build up my other main profiles (see above), and I prefer to use that name when I interact with a discussion. Also, most social media sites provide a pretty accessible API, which makes the login process much easier. Minimizing the login time for anything is key. If I can just click a button that says “log in with my Google account”, that’s a delighter for me.
