ASQ Panel to Address Congressional Healthcare Caucus

ASQ has been invited to convene a panel of experts to appear before members of a congressional healthcare caucus on September 15 in Washington, D.C. The panel will discuss healthcare information technology (Health IT).

ASQ’s presenters on the panel will brief the caucus on the importance of proper preparation in order to ensure successful implementation of Health IT. They will emphasize the need to optimize the business processes and culture of provider organizations before deploying new information technologies.

The panel will present four real-world cases of Health IT implementation—two from hospital settings and two from ambulatory care settings. Within each environment, there will be one “best practice” case and one “lessons learned” case.

The forum will take place before the 21st Century Health Care Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressmen Patrick Kennedy (D-Rhode Island) and Tim Murphy (R-PA) co-chair the caucus.

The bipartisan 21st Century Health Care Caucus is comprised of 47 members of the House of Representatives who come together to discuss healthcare policy issues. Information technology is a primary interest of the caucus. With the nation about to make a huge investment of economic stimulus funds in Health IT, ASQ will emphasize that proper preparation is the key to success.

ASQ panel presenters are:

  • Joseph A. Fortuna, chair-elect of the ASQ Healthcare Division
  • Paloma Hernandez, President and Chief Executive Officer of Urban Health Plan, Bronx, N.Y.
  • Robert Burney, Director of Quality Improvement with the Medical Department at the U.S. Department of State, Washington, D.C.
  • Christopher J. DeFlitch, Chief Medical Information Officer at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.
  • Doug Sears, Director of Performance Improvement/Knowledge Transfer at Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, Greenville, S.C.
